My days & nights of officiating have brought me much joy. I always enjoyed the physical, emotional, and mental challenges, liked my time "on stage" to deliver correct calls, 99% of the time, had compassion and empathy, and contributed a dollop of humor to show the human side compared to the militaristic approach. I most enjoyed the comraderie, war stories, and opportunities to network with the famous and infamous. Please indulge me once more as I attempt to spew some of the more interesting episodes. Most will be honestly delivered, but some will be marginally embellished, and others will have gaping holes, misspellings, and mis-quotes.

"The Buckets List"
The history of hoops in San Diego from high schools to colleges,
from rec leagues to the pros,....... and more......
(was to be a published book - now online here!)

We will be interviewing some SD notables to get their opinions including: Dennis Ackerman, Wade Vickery, Jud Buechler, Jim Tomey, Al Schaffer, Chad Nelson, Ollie Goulston, Don Kojis, Manny Gomes, Bill Walton, Bill Tosheff, Joe Moeller, and more.

At first glance, San Diego wouldn't seem to have a rich basketball history, but after much examination and networking, I've found that here does exist many unique and notable experiences, people, events, and milestones worthy of communication, to the network of hoop enthusiasts, in America's Finest City.

Jeff Matuzko bought BOSS from me and is now running leagues as well as officials

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Former La Jolla Country Day (National Player of the Year) and All-American at Stanford , Candice Wiggins is in her 2nd year as a player for the Minnesota Lynx, WNBA. Go Candice, make us proud.

"Please don't snap his neck, Swen!"
First, you should know that Swen Nater at 6'11" and 250 pounds of raw sinew and muscle
is probably not the guy you want to be angry at you! Then you should be aware that he was an undefeated player his 2 seasons at UCLA and he is the only player to have lead both the NBA and ABA in rebounds for a season! He's also the only collegiate senior to have never started as a senior and still be drafted in the 1st round of the NBA draft! OK he was the back-up and tutor for, none other than Big Bill Walton (see more at www.coachswen.com ).
So it's sometime in the mid 80's and Swen in playing in a church league. Every time he gets a rebound, this 5'7" guy tries to pry the ball loose, but continuously whacks Swen on the arm. He's finally had enough and gives the guy the "evil eye" and says, "if you do that again, I'm gonna hurt you". Needless to say, that was the last time this guy fouls him. PS I don't blame Swen one bit!
OK the real story: The San Diego Clippers just hire Jim Lynam as the head coach.
He comes to PB Rec to meet some of his charges who are battling in the A League. Swen and 6'11" John Service are going back and forth all game with boney elbows flying everywhere! Swen gets hit again and it's the final straw. ext thing you know he's got poor John by the neck and about to put a can of buttwhackin' on him! I pray the title of this segment and my prayers are answered. Order is restored by the refs ..... and the new coach, and the game continued!

The Travelling Pants (a pair of short stories)
So I'm in a rush, or was I simply hungover? Anyway, I'm kindof late for my 4:00PM men's tournament game at Grossmont College and need to do a Superman change from regular street guy to become "the ref". Oops, I'm unpacking in the locker room and realize that I've completely forgotten to include my black, polyester, beltless, 38X32 pants. Luckily for me, Jerry Waldron had just reffed the prior contest and opted to lend me his 36X31s. They were dry, as his lack of effort produced only a modicum of perspiration (lol). Well the game was completed without incident. However I must say that I had to "suck my gut in" for an hour and a half.
Not the end of the story, cuz the "boys" had to give me the business at the year end high school association banquet. They remarked that my mind was affected by late night cocktails and I was running out of braincells ..........Blah Blah, Blah. They all had a laugh on me. Yeah sure, I'd stand idle and not fire back. NOT!!!! My response was, "That's the best game those pans ever reffed!".

More Pants:
Different year and I'm travelling to San Diegito HS to work a playoff of El Camino vs Helix. Weather is bad and the rain-soaked roads caused mself and many others to be tardy. I enter the locker room to greet my partner, Matt Heintzel's brother (who was the Ref and was his first "big " game! He's serious about having a thorough and meaningful "pre-game" conference. (The room is filled with a half dozen of his cronies, wanting to be a part of the festivities. Me, on the other hand, just want to get out onto the court and give 'em their $50 bucks worth! Since he's the R, he's supposed to introduce us to the coaches and speak to the captains. It's a full house and he's already perspiring from nervousness.
Before he has a chance to introduce us to the visiting coach, John Singer, I grab his arm and wisk him away toward the assistant coach, Frank Theroux. I say, "Frank, this is Mike Heintzell and I want him to be clear that you'll be doing the talking, not Singer!" (Frank nods in agreement without explaining that he refs part-time for my assigning agency). Mike's flustered, so reluctantly meanders over to introduce me to Coach Johnson. He assumes that we've never met. I allow him to proceed with the formalities and then wisecrack, "Hey Ray, are you ever gonna stop wearing those brown polyester old-man's pants? They look ridiculous!" Mike is flabbergasted that I have the gall to insult this respected No County legend. Little does he know that Ray and I are buddies from working at Magic Johnson's camps for years!
I busted up when I communicated these relationships to Mike, just prior to tip-off. He finally relaxed
and we had a fun ballgame together!

How many, Manny?
Manny Gomes is one of my fav partners of all time. This night we go to UCSD (the old gym) to work a men's game vs Menlo College. We're not informed that the prior meeting up in the Bay Area
didn't end well. Coach Tom Marshall has given instructions to his entire team that if a fight breaks out,
nobody is to come off the bench or otherwise become a combatant.
Well, sure enough, Menlo is leading by 6 or 8 points, and a UCSD player scores on a short jumper in the paint. As he turns to go downcourt, he barrels over a stationary and surprised Menlo player! It's mayhem in about two seconds. Fist are flying, players are wrestling, coaches are screaming, and the fans are hysterical. I attempt to intervene and actually stop a fist from wacking an unsuspecting Triton.
After the smoke clears, we eject the Menlo coach, and do some managerial accounting, we assess 12 Ts vs Menlo and 2 vs UCSD. Manny asks me, "How many do I administer?" My reply is, "Go down to the other end and keep shooting 'til I tell you to stop!" I knew how to apply the rule as I had discussed it with fellow whistle-blower, Doug Dannevik, just a few days earlier!
UCSD guard, Rob Rittgers toes the line and casually sinks 24 out of 24 freethrows...... without the clock ever moving! Later he adds 6 of 6 more! A multitude of NCAA records (some of Pete Maravich's) are eclipsed in this historic contest!
I'll share an addendum soon  ....following a chance meeting (of the Menlo coach) several years later, while he was a USC assistant coach, on a recruiting trip.
You'll appreciate the irony of this experience!

One vs Five
Jan 8, 1982, Ray Epton Jr (Madison) outscored the entire Saint Augustine team. Final score was Madison 73, Saints 44, with Mr Epton scoring 20 buckets and 8 freethrows for a total of 48 points.

No Clippers = No Dealio for Alman
I was contacted by the NBA through my bestest partner ever, Randy Bruno, to start the Pro-Am League.
It was to be co-sponsored by Spalding and I was to market it as I saw fit.
A benefit showcase game was played at the Parkway Gym in Chula Vista between Kellen Winslow's All Stars vs The Wind Machine (A League champs at PB).
Here's the scoring chart: Winslow's = Dave Knudsen (UC Irvine) 8, William Taylor 6, Kellen Winslow (SD Chargers)17, Pete Dufour (Merrimack DII All-American) 6, Sam Reed 8, Roger Davis 7, Paul Dufour (U New Hampshire) DNP, JC Pinnick 8, Ray Gunn 8, Carl Rustin (NBA) 22, Derrick Blair 4 = 99
Wind Machine = Greg Lee (UCLA, SD Clippers)18, Bill Walton (UCLA, NBA HOF)14, Drew Head (Cal) 18, Bob Carrington (Boston College all-american, NBA) 20, John Service 6'11" 5, Steve Copp (SDSU all-american) 5, Jake Poole (UTEP all-american) 15, Jeff Lipscomb 8, Bob Bartholomew 16 = 119
Scorekeeper = Cory Dunkirk
The Clips fled San Diego for the glitz/glamour of Los Angeles, and the financial support for the Pro-Am league was withdrawn! End of that story!

What qualifies me, Barry Alman, to write about San Diego sports and such?

I was born in Boston 1950, witnessed the Celtic Dynasty starting in 1963, played at Malden High, co-captain at New Prep in Cambridge 1968, and ULowell (BS/BA Mktg/Mgt 1975). I have played with Dr J at UMass 1968, and visited the Hall of Fame in Springfield.
I have officiated every level of basketball imaginable in San Diego, since 1979, including 10 CIF finals in a row, an NBA all-star game, the SD/LA Clippers tryout camps for a dozen years, several high school all star games, the inaugural Cal State Games, the first San Diego - Tijuana high school tournament held in Tijuana, Gus Macker, Hoop It Up, & the Holiday Bowl 3on3, women's NCAA DI games in several conferences, the World Police & Fire Games, the Maccabi Games, men's JC state playoffs, coached 15 years of Magic Johnson summer camps, CBA evaluation camp with Henry Bibby, and ......................... too many men's and youth recreational league games to remember.

** I have interfaced, worked with, golfed with, and socialized with thousands of players, coaches, parents, fans, and officials, from every walk of life. I created the BOSS officiating service and assigned 1000s of games year round for 25+ years, which is the dominant service in the area! I sold BOSS to Jeff Matuszko in 2006. I have an awesome ability to recall people and events. I want to EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN, and COMMUNICATE with the San Diego sporting community!
I am humble and always nice!  LOL

More food for thought:

Who were the best "dynamic duos" in SD HS history?
Can San Diego sustain a pro or minor league franchise?
Have you ever heard of (adult rec) The Wind Machine or Coast to Coast?
Was there ever a bigger HS matchup than Erik Meeks vs Travis Knight?
Do you know which shoe manufacturer now has its home office
in San Diego?
Ever hear of George Young, where did he play college ball??
Who was better: Free Agent Freddie, Sandy Fisch, or Rich Nudo?
Which cop was a better player: Paul Hubka, Joe Lehr, or Sweet Lou Mobley?
Who was a better freethrow-shooter: Ryan Demerjian, Wade Vickery, or Rob Rittgers?
Who was the better scorer: Bosco, Ty Shelley, Killion, Buddinger, or ????
Why do Chuck Cromar (OTL best ever) and Alan Trammell (MLB allstar) like to rap about hoops?
Is Alliant U in Scripps Ranch (run by Sol) the best venue for club basketball tournaments?
What's up with the new minor league team (owner Ross Kurland) (coaches Terry Mason/Ray Johnson)?
Why did Randy Bruno give up an opportunity to ref in the  NBA
Were writers Stan McNeal and Mark Ziegler any good at playing hoops?
Should San Diego host an annual coaches/officials clinic?
Would the community benefit from a BOSS discount membership program ?

In Memoriam:

"The Bucket List Book" - a poem

Hall of Famer Bill Walton, he's both regal and grand
Went from Helix to the Bruins and then to Port-land.
His relationship with Coach Wooden is a story to be told
Achievements and Fellowship in the book will unfold.

Four sons he begat: free thinkers... never pawns
Big Adam a Falcon the others were Dons.
To Louisiana then Princeton their mom made those treks
Made easier to the Wildcats,  and then the Aztecs.

Hoops history in Diego, not rich at first glance
Speak with Vickery or Shaffer and give it a chance.
First Hambone, then Cliff, don't forget Terri Mann,
Jud, Jelani, the Dudleys, now Tyler's the man!

The coaches successful you know some by name
Top officials tho diligent, they still got the blame.
It's time to reveal who made the glory,
From Alman thru Walton they'll tell the story !

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rules & relationships when properly explained
Add educated coaches and officials well-trained.
Should lead to enjoyment for all those involved
Yes for San Diego count one problem solved!

27. The "referee" can make decisions on anything not specifically covered by the rules.

Just a few basketball heroes!

Magic & Larry                               Bill & Wilt                         The Big O             Dr J & Kareem           Pistol Pete            Jerry & Hondo

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were collegiate rivals (Mich State & Indiana State), each played 13 seasons and were All NBA 1st Team 9 times. Total "team players" and ferocious competitors. The Celtics and Lakers rivalry was historic during their magnificent careers.
Magic's stats: 19.5 ppg, 10,140 assists, tallest guard ever in NBA at 6'9". Played guard, forward, and center in same game!
Larry "Legend" stats = 24.3 ppg, 21,791 points (part Celtic's "Big3" with Parrish & McHale), NBA coach and general manager.

A storied rivalry by two giants of the basketball world. Bill Russell 6'9" 220 (2/12/34) and Wilt Chamberlain, 7'1" 275, (8/21/36).
Seems as if Wilt was the more dominant, but Bill usually ended up as "winner" (11 NBA titles versus only 2).
Bill played at USF (2 NCAA titles with KC Jones), captained the Gold Medal '56 Olympic team, was a 12X NBA allstar, and had 21,620 career rebounds, was the 1st African-American head coach (following Red Auerbach) in the NBA. He was a great defender and shot blocker who caused several rules to be changed, including widening the key and adding offensive basket interference.
Wilt "The Stilt" (Kansas) was a dominating force in the NBA , (the only player to score 100 pts in a game), between 61-63 scored 50 pts or more 6X vs the Celtics, had 55 rebounds vs Celtics but lost 132-128, 7X scoring leader, 13X all star, one season averaged 40 reb and 50 pts, even lead league in assists one year to prove a point! Great trackster in 100 yd dash, shot put, triple jump and high jump. Was reason that ball cannot be passed over the backboard (at Kansas inbound play was passed over board so he could dunk).
In 1965 Wilt signed a contract for $100,000. Not to be outdone, Bill renogiated his for $100,001.

Oscar Robertson "The Big O", 11/24/38, 6'5" 220, is the only player to average a triple double for an entire season! '59 & '60 college Player of Year, '60 Olympic Gold, '61 rookie of year, 12X all star, 181 triple doubles, career: 25.7 pts (26,710), 7.5 reb, 9.5 assists.

Julius ("Dr J") Erving 6'7" 210 (2/22/50) , Univ of Mass 2 years 26.3 ppg 20.2 rpg but played in relative obscurity. Played guard, forward, and center in HS due to being only 6'3" (I can attest as I played some hoops with him at UMass in '68). Became an ABA superstar with Virgina Squires (27.3 and 3X Player of year). Probably 1st player to be known by a single name, "Doctor".
